Danish Design was developed in mid-20th century and for years Danish designers had lived in the shadows of modern masters like Arne Jacobsen and Verner Panton. Prominent examples are the Egg chair and the Panton chair. Today this has radically changed, and the design scene is again flourishing.

Copenhagen is a green capital surrounded by water and parks, with climate-friendly citizens to match. Valby and Southern Harbour are  upcoming neighbourhoods. Valby is an old village with a 100 years industrial history, which has been recycled in a new version. Southern Harbour is a meeting point for a different Copenhagen. The lock was established in 1903. Through 114 years the area has been expanded with a harbour, reclaimed land, allotment gardens, factories and new architecture.

Join a 2½-hour bicycle tour, which will take us from Valby’s old village to the new recycled version of an old industrial area to green oasis and allotment gardens. From the middle of the 1900-century wealthy and well-known citizens moved to the area Rosenvænget and Brumleby was the first suburb housing for poor citizens in Copenhagen. Urban Vesterbro was for many years known as the rough and naughty neighbourhood synonymous with porn, prostitution and pushers. Today Vesterbro still has got its edge but the neighbourhood is the most trendy, leading and creative in Copenhagen. Vesterbro is where cafés and fashion shops literally mushroom. Classic Frederiksberg is a fashionable part of Copenhagen with excellent shopping opportunities and green spaces. The area is more posh and the people living here are usually older and more established. Frederiksberg is also known for its green oasis with Frederiksberg Gardens and the romantic Garden of the Faculty of Life Sciences.

In the year 960 Roskilde was named the new capital of Denmark by a Viking   King and was the capital for nearly 480 years. So, Roskilde has a long history, dating from the pre-Christian Viking Age. The UNESCO- listed Gothic cathedral housing now 39 tombs of the Danish monarchs. It was completed in 1275. Today Roskilde is also home for the famous Roskilde Rock Music festival.

 

Join me for a 2½-hour walking tour, which takes us from the marketplace since the Middle Ages to the Yellow Palace, which was built for the royal family in the 1730s.  From the palace yard, we step out into Cathedral Square and the proud UNESCO World Heritage Site, Roskilde Cathedral. The tour continues to the charming old harbour and to the Viking Ship Museum.
From the harbour area, the walk now goes up through City Park to Roskilde City Museum, Roskilde Convent and the main street Algade, where the tour ends.

Frederiksborg Castle is located in the sleepy village of Hillerød. It is an absolute gem in the Danish countryside. Inside the castle walls great cultural experiences await with the beautiful natural surroundings. Frederiksborg Castle was built by the Danish King Christian 4th in the beginning of the 17th century, and it is the largest renaissance construction in Scandinavia.

Ships dock right at Elsinore town centre, and close to Kronborg Castle: Home of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and host of the Shakespeare Festival every summer. Kronborg Castle was built in the early 1500 century, to collect dues of ships. Nearby, the new Maritime Museum offers a visionary presentation of Denmark’s maritime heritage.
